Preparing Shopify for Agentic Payments does not begin with installing a new gateway. It begins by making the entire path from product understanding to authorized payment reliable for machines as well as humans.
1. Establish product truth
Audit titles, descriptions, variants, identifiers, prices, availability and product attributes. Remove contradictions between product pages, collections, FAQs and policies.
2. Improve Machine Experience
An agent should be able to determine what the product is, who it is for, why it differs and what constraints apply. Rich, unique product information improves the decision before payment.
3. Validate Machine Interface
Understand how AI systems can interact with the store through Shopify-native capabilities, APIs and emerging protocols such as UCP. Avoid assuming the visual storefront is the only commerce interface.
4. Audit checkout
Test variants, inventory, currencies, shipping, taxes, discounts and policy visibility. Agentic checkout still needs authoritative commercial calculations.
5. Map payment methods by market
Document Shop Pay, cards, wallets, UPI and third-party gateways actually available to the merchant's target buyers. Compatibility can differ by market and agentic channel.
6. Define authorization and governance
Determine where buyer confirmation, fraud controls and human review remain necessary. More autonomy is not automatically better.
7. Validate outcomes
Track agent-originated discovery, checkout failures, payment friction and order quality as these channels become measurable.
This checklist is part of the broader Global Agentic Payments Readiness Framework. It also connects directly to Machine Experience, Machine Interface and Codified Algorithmic Thinking™: define the objective, decompose the payment journey, implement controlled changes, validate and learn.
