Short answer: a dropshipping Shopify store needs more than a supplier app connection. Product data, inventory availability, order routing, supplier acceptance, tracking, cancellations, returns, customer communication and margin all need clearly defined ownership.
Dropshipping changes who physically handles inventory, but the merchant still owns the customer promise.
Map the order lifecycle before choosing an app
Draw the process from a customer placing an order to the supplier receiving it, fulfilling it, returning tracking information and handling an exception. This reveals what the integration actually needs to automate.
Synchronize the right product information
Supplier feeds can contain titles, descriptions and images optimized for wholesale distribution rather than the merchant's brand. Decide which fields can sync automatically and which require merchant-controlled content. Never let supplier convenience become inconsistent storefront data.
Inventory needs a source of truth
Define how frequently availability changes, what happens when supplier inventory becomes unavailable after an order, and whether buffer stock rules are required. Overselling damages trust quickly, especially when fulfillment is outside the merchant's direct control.
Order and tracking states must be visible
The merchant should know whether an order was transmitted successfully, accepted by the supplier, shipped and delivered. Customers should receive accurate tracking and support information. Integration failures need an exception process rather than disappearing into automation.
Returns are part of the integration design
Where does a return go? Who authorizes it? Who pays return shipping? What happens to damaged or lost goods? Supplier policy and merchant policy must be reconciled before the first order, not after the first complaint.
Calculate economics after all supplier costs
Include product cost, shipping, transaction fees, app fees, returns, refunds, advertising and customer support. A large catalog is not product-market fit if the contribution margin disappears after fulfillment.
Codified Commerce handles the storefront/product architecture through Codified Commerce team. Integration requirements beyond standard setup should be treated as their own defined technical scope rather than hidden inside theme work.
