Visa and Mastercard are both preparing their networks for commerce in which AI agents participate in purchasing. Shopify merchants should pay attention, but they do not need to choose an “AI payment network” as if this were a new gateway comparison.
The common problem
Both networks need to preserve trust when a machine acts between cardholder intent and merchant payment. That involves agent identity, credentials, authorization, fraud signals and evidence that the user intended the purchase.
Different programs, shared direction
The networks may use different technical approaches, partnerships and branding, but the strategic direction is similar: make existing payment acceptance capable of supporting legitimate agent-initiated transactions.
What matters to a Shopify merchant
Merchants should focus on their own readiness: accurate products, compatible checkout, supported payment methods, fraud controls and clear policies. Network-level agent technology is valuable only if the merchant's commerce layer can supply the right item and transaction context.
Avoid network-specific optimization
Codified Commerce recommends preparing for multi-agent and multi-payment commerce. A merchant selling globally may encounter Shop Pay, Visa, Mastercard, UPI and third-party payment providers across different markets and AI surfaces.
For that reason, use the Global Agentic Payments Readiness Framework rather than designing the store around a single payment-network announcement.
