Short answer: the most affordable Shopify setup is the smallest scope that produces a reliable, sellable store without creating expensive rework. Indian startups should compare total setup cost—not only the quoted design fee—and decide which work can safely be DIY, which requires specialist configuration and which can wait until demand is proven.
“Affordable” should mean capital-efficient. A cheap store that has to be rebuilt after product import, payment configuration or launch can be more expensive than a deliberately scoped first version.
Three common setup models
1. Founder-led DIY
The founder configures Shopify, uses a standard theme, loads products and connects the required services. This minimizes cash cost and can work for a simple catalog when the founder has time to learn. The hidden cost is founder time and the risk of structural decisions being made without experience.
2. Assisted setup
The founder owns content and business decisions while an expert handles architecture, product structure, critical configuration and launch review. For many startups this is the most capital-efficient model because specialist time is applied to decisions that are expensive to reverse.
3. Managed implementation
A Shopify specialist owns a defined scope from structure through launch. This costs more upfront but can reduce coordination, accelerate execution and provide clearer accountability.
Where not to cut cost
- product and variant architecture;
- payments, shipping and tax configuration;
- domain and critical account ownership;
- mobile purchase flow;
- policies and operational promises;
- data quality for products and collections.
A decorative section can be changed later. A badly structured catalog with hundreds of variants is much more painful to correct.
Where a startup can defer spend
Custom features, advanced integrations, complex automation and premium creative production can often be phased after the business has evidence that they are required. Start with the minimum system that can accurately sell the product and collect useful market feedback.
Compare proposals by scope, not headline price
Ask every provider to define what constitutes completion. Does the fee include product setup, collections, theme configuration, mobile validation, payment/shipping setup, policies, testing and handover? How many products or pages are included? What happens if the scope changes?
Codified Commerce's Codified Commerce team is designed around defined implementation work rather than an open-ended website project. When a defined implementation is ready to be commissioned, Codified Algorithmic Thinking™ is the transaction layer.
