Short answer: set up a Shopify store from scratch by defining the product model first, then configuring the store, catalog, theme, commerce settings, policies, measurement and launch checks in that order. For an Indian startup, payments, tax treatment, shipping and operational responsibilities should be resolved before traffic is sent to the store.
The biggest setup mistake is starting with the homepage. A homepage cannot repair a weak product model. Start with the commerce system underneath it.
1. Define what you are selling
Document product types, variants, attributes, pricing logic, inventory ownership and fulfillment. If a product has sizes, colors, packs, subscriptions or market-specific differences, decide which are true variants and which are separate products before importing data.
2. Build the catalog architecture
Create a consistent naming convention and decide how collections will be organized. Product titles, descriptions, images, attributes and variant values should use repeatable rules. This reduces future catalog debt and makes merchandising easier.
3. Configure the Shopify foundation
Set the store's business information, domain, markets and operational settings. Choose a theme because it supports the catalog and desired customer journey—not because its demo looks attractive.
4. Configure payments, shipping and taxes
Confirm the payment providers and methods available to the business, define shipping zones/rates and configure tax settings for the actual operating model. The correct configuration depends on the merchant's business, registrations, products and destinations; professional tax advice may be appropriate where required.
5. Create policies and service information
Shipping, returns, privacy, terms and contact/support information should reflect what the business can genuinely deliver. These pages are not filler. They help buyers understand risk and increasingly provide useful context to search and AI systems.
6. Design the conversion journey
Build navigation, collection pages, product pages, cart and supporting pages around buyer decisions. Review on mobile early. Do not wait until launch day to discover that variant selection, sticky elements or long copy create friction.
7. Add only necessary apps
Install an app when there is a defined requirement that Shopify or the theme does not already meet. Every app can add cost, data dependencies and maintenance, so startup stacks should remain intentional.
8. Validate before launch
- place test orders where possible;
- review payment and shipping logic;
- test product variants and inventory states;
- check policy/contact links;
- review mobile layouts and key browser states;
- confirm analytics and conversion tracking readiness.
After launch, the work changes from setup to evidence. The store should start learning which products, messages and journeys produce demand. That is where product-market fit becomes operational rather than theoretical.
Codified Commerce handles this foundation through CAT AI Automations, keeping product architecture and store setup in the same scope.
