Agentic payments in India with UPI and Razorpay

India is an important Agentic Payments market because it does not need to copy the card-and-wallet architecture of the United States. UPI already provides a large real-time digital-payment layer, while Indian payment companies are actively exploring how AI agents can operate with delegated authority.

Why UPI changes the architecture

UPI connects payment authorization closely to bank accounts and mobile identity. Agentic commerce therefore needs mechanisms that let software act within explicit limits without simply handing an agent unrestricted payment authority.

Razorpay and agentic payment infrastructure

Razorpay has been developing Agentic Payments concepts around AI-ready payment experiences, APIs and UPI-based delegated payment models. For Indian Shopify merchants, this is strategically important because Shopify Payments availability is not the only route toward agentic commerce.

Shopify plus Indian rails

The merchant's Shopify store can remain the commerce system of record while Indian payment providers handle locally relevant payment methods. The key question is how emerging AI shopping and checkout interfaces connect those layers.

What merchants should prepare now

Keep product and variant data clean, maintain accurate policies, understand configured gateways, avoid fragile checkout assumptions and monitor agent-oriented capabilities from Shopify, UPI participants and providers such as Razorpay.

Read UPI Reserve Pay and AI-Agent Purchases for the delegated-payment concept, and compare India's path with the United States.

Codified Commerce views this as a global Agentic Commerce capability with local payment implementations—not an India-only service.
