For AI agents to pay safely, they need something more precise than access to a user's payment credentials. They need bounded authority. UPI Reserve Pay points toward a model in which funds or payment capacity can be reserved for a defined purpose while controls remain with the user.
Why reservation matters
Imagine asking an agent to reorder business supplies under ₹5,000, book approved travel within a budget or purchase a replacement item only if a specified price is available. The useful innovation is not autonomy by itself; it is autonomy inside constraints.
From intent to mandate
An agentic payment system can translate user intent into limits: maximum amount, permitted merchant or category, validity period and confirmation rules. The payment rail then enforces those limits rather than relying solely on the agent's reasoning.
Why this matters for Shopify
Indian Shopify merchants may increasingly encounter buyers whose AI agents arrive with delegated payment authority. Merchant systems need accurate product, price, availability and checkout information so that the agent's bounded mandate can resolve to a valid purchase.
Governance before autonomy
Codified Commerce would treat delegated payments as part of AI governance and Machine Interface design. The machine should know what it can do, the payment system should enforce what it may spend, and the merchant should preserve a clear order and audit trail.
