Direct answer: The Moving Target operating model sets a baseline, observes selected signals, distinguishes real change from noise and routes a corroborated finding to the right decision owner. Implementation requires a paid Automation; CAT AI identifies the next action after the customer shares the goal and access.
This article explains the merchant-facing operating model and deliverables. For the short definition, see What Is Moving Target?. For the actual signal register, see what to monitor.
Moving Target is Codified Commerce’s continuous intelligence layer for Shopify. It observes relevant customer, commerce, content, advertising, AI-agent and market signals; detects meaningful movement; and recommends when another controlled improvement may be justified.
Why Shopify needs a continuous intelligence layer
A Shopify business does not operate in a fixed environment. Customer language changes, products gain or lose traction, competitors alter offers, platforms introduce new capabilities and AI shopping systems interpret product information in new ways. A strategy that was coherent when an automation shipped can gradually become less aligned with the market.
Moving Target provides a disciplined observation phase after implementation. Its purpose is to notice when the assumptions behind the current configuration deserve review—not to create constant change.
Observe, detect and recommend
The operating sequence has three parts. Observe connected signals that are relevant to the approved business outcome. Detect accumulated evidence, contradictions or drift rather than reacting to every fluctuation. Recommend a bounded next step when the evidence is strong enough to justify merchant attention.
This separation matters. A signal is not automatically a diagnosis, and a diagnosis is not permission to modify a store.
What it can monitor
Depending on available data and merchant authorization, observations can include product performance, search queries, customer questions, review language, returns, content accuracy, campaign outcomes, AI-agent behaviour and relevant external market changes. The signal set is scoped; it is not unrestricted surveillance.
A useful signal must connect to a business question. If a metric cannot influence an approved decision, collecting it creates noise rather than intelligence.
How Moving Target connects to CAT
Codified Algorithmic Thinking™ directs implementation through Define, Decompose, Orchestrate, Execute, Validate and Learn. Moving Target follows the Learn stage and watches for evidence that should restart the cycle. The next cycle begins because conditions moved—not because a recurring calendar task became due.
CAT governs how work is performed. Moving Target helps determine when another cycle may be warranted.
What merchants receive
The useful output is a recommendation with supporting observations, likely implications, known limitations and a proposed controlled scope. The merchant can approve it, reject it, request more evidence or defer it.
Continuous monitoring does not mean continuous billing for implementation. Each new automation remains separately scoped and approved.
What Moving Target is not
It is not a guarantee of rankings, citations, advertising performance or revenue. It does not give an AI agent unrestricted authority. It does not replace merchant judgment. Its role is to create a more accountable bridge between changing evidence and the next commerce decision.

Frequently asked questions
Does Moving Target change my Shopify store automatically?
No. It can recommend a next step, but implementation requires separate merchant approval.
Is it only for marketing?
No. It can support commerce, content, advertising, operational and AI-readiness decisions where relevant signals are available.
Is Moving Target a separate product?
No. It is a core capability within Codified Algorithmic Thinking™ and the broader methodology.

Moving Target is a Codified Commerce methodology for continuous observation and controlled recommendations. Available signals and implementation options depend on merchant permissions, platform support and the next action CAT AI identifies for the business goal.
