The Future of Conversational Commerce: Sidekick AI, Shopify Inbox & the CAT Stack

Direct answer: Shopify conversational commerce has merchant-side assistance, customer chat and a reliable store information layer. Sidekick and Inbox serve different users; accurate catalog, policy and workflow data supports the wider experience.

This overview explains their relationship, while Inbox versus custom AI addresses a specific build decision. Both are Machine Experience applications. CAT AI brings Machine Experience, Moving Target and Next Product Move together to identify and run the next Automation; it is not a mandatory chatbot product.

Conversational commerce now spans the merchant and buyer sides

Shopify Sidekick helps merchants work inside the admin, while Shopify Inbox increasingly brings AI-assisted conversation to the buyer experience. These are different surfaces, but both depend on the quality and structure of the underlying commerce environment.

What Sidekick contributes

Sidekick can help merchants analyse store information and carry out supported admin tasks conversationally. It is a Shopify capability inside the broader operating environment, not a standalone Codified Commerce service.

What Inbox AI changes

When a buyer asks about products, policies, availability or support, the quality of the answer depends on accessible product data, clear policies, useful FAQs and well-structured commerce content. That is why conversational commerce is partly a Machine Experience problem.

How CAT AI runs an Automation

After the customer purchases an Automation and shares a business goal and required access, Machine Experience checks what is in place, Moving Target identifies what needs attention, and Next Product Move directs the next action. CAT AI begins and completes the Automation with Codified Commerce expert oversight where needed. The customer approves material decisions or permissions when required.

What makes a store agent-ready?

  • Clean product and variant data.
  • Clear policies and support information.
  • Machine-readable page structure and semantics.
  • Reliable inventory and commerce state.
  • Clear permissions, expert oversight and escalation paths.

How Codified Commerce helps

Machine Experience contributes to a CAT AI Automation. One Automation starts at ₹10,000 for Boost; higher speeds are available, and the selected price is paid in full. The customer shares the goal; CAT AI determines and runs the next useful action, with expert management.

Update: This prediction has been confirmed by Shopify.

When I wrote this article in April 2026, the LLM-powered Shopify Inbox agent was a forward-looking prediction based on Shopify’s existing infrastructure — Sidekick AI, Shopify Magic, and the Shop App.

As of June 2026, Shopify’s admin now shows a dedicated panel inside Shopify Inbox with the label: “Put an AI sales associate on your store — Coming soon.” The agent is described as knowing your products and policies, learning your brand voice, and handing off to human staff when needed.

This is exactly the conversational commerce engine described in this post — native to Shopify, not a third-party integration.

Merchants who have already built AI-ready infrastructure using the CAT Stack — structured product data, LLM-readable policies, CAT-AEO content — are positioned to activate this agent the moment it goes live. Those who haven’t will be retrofitting.

The window to prepare is now.
